HBF urges action to prevent homebuilding shortage

The Home Builders Federation has called on the government to implement a new planning system to prevent a homebuilding shortage.

A new planning system is required to avoid a further reduction in the number of homes being built, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has said.

The scrapped regional spatial strategies formed an "integral part" of the previous government's system and the HBF has advised that a replacement is needed urgently.

According to the National Housing Federation, the coalition government's decision to axe regional house building targets has led to almost 85,000 planned homes being shelved.

This may mean that the number of new homes built this year could fall below 100,000 for the first time in almost a century.

"What is going to define how much that figure drops is going to be two main things. One is how the government decides to play its planning policy and what levels of mortgage availability we see coming back over the next few months," said Steve Turner, head of communications at the HBF.
