Intasure’s visit to Italy

Intasure’s Claims Manager Andrew Hale recently travelled to Italy to better understand and experience in person the impact of the Italian earthquakes on our customers and their holiday homes.

In August and October 2016 central Italy suffered three severe earthquakes, all of which measured over 6 on the Richter scale, resulting in widespread damage and sadly loss of life in the region. This caused hundreds of aftershocks to continue throughout 2016 and on the 18th January 2017 another earthquake hit, causing further damage in the same area of Italy.

Understandably, Intasure received calls from customers who had suffered damage to their properties and needed to make a claim on their policy. So to learn more about the challenges of dealing with these earthquake claims, Intasure decided to visit the region for two days earlier this year to inspect eight properties insured through Intasure. What became apparent is that not only did each claim have its only unique issues but they also shared similar challenges, such as questions from customers following their own geometra’s report (survey report) as well as dealing with different geometra’s (surveyors) and their view on how best to rebuild and repair certain properties.

Andrew Hale, Intasure’s Claims Manager, tells experience of the trip:

“Whilst on site we met a couple of customers who were happy with the way the claims were being handled and it was clear that our loss adjusters had built up a good relationship with these customers. This makes it easy for the customers to feel relaxed with how the claim is being progressed so that they can get their holiday home back to its original condition.

Overall the visit was a huge success and has helped all parties fully understand the challenges we face with these claims to enable our customers to get their dream holiday home back to its original beautiful condition. The experience will assist Intasure and our underwriters in providing the best customer journey for all customers impacted by the Italian earthquakes.”

If you ever find yourself in a situation where an earthquake strikes, there are a number of things you can do to help stay safe.

  1. Stay calm as this can help to prevent panic
  2. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area away from falling hazards such as tress, power lines and buildings
  3. If you must leave a building, use extreme caution and assess your surroundings, be on the lookout for falling debris and do not re-enter the building until it’s all clear to do so
  4. Expect aftershocks as this is very common after a large earthquake and can continue for days
